Beaches

Pohue Bay Beach is a very remote, secluded beach on the Big Island’s southwest coast in the Ocean View region, just south of the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates and Hawaiian Ranchos. The views out here can be incredible with soft sand and amazing blue / turqoise waters.

Punaluʻu beach is the most famous black sand beach of Hawaii. Two reasons for the popularity of this beach are the gorgeous black sand beach *and* the fact that you can often see endangered Hawksbill turtles and green turtles basking in the sun on the beach.
Punaluʻu is an expansive and easily accessible black sand beach on the Big Island. It is a great place to go for a quick swim, snorkel, a (short) coastal hike, camping (with permit), or to stop for a picnic.
Nature Areas

“Come, explore one of the most fascinating and ‘youngest’ places on the planet.”
Kula Kai Caverns is located in Ocean View on the south side of the Big Island. Experienced and knowledgeable guides offer spectacular and memorable adventures inside this braided thousand-year-old year old lava tube system. You’ll learn about lava and the science of the caves, as well as how tubes are formed and the ways Hawaiians used them. Many say this is the highlight of their Hawaii vacation!

Ka‘ū Preserve is part of the largest and most intact expanse of native forest in the state. Made up of four separate parcels of forested land, the preserve features mountainous ridgelines with narrow plateaus broken by alternating steep valleys. Closed-canopy koa and‘ōhi‘a forest shelters a lush understory of native uluhe and hāpu‘u tree ferns. Rare plants like the nuku ‘i‘iwi still survive here, along with rare and endangered forest birds like the Hawaiian hawk (‘io) ‘apapane, ‘i’iwi, ‘elepaio, ‘amakihi and ‘ākepa.

Surrounded by Manuka Forest Reserve, Manuka State Wayside Park is 13.4 acres with an arboretum. The park features Manuka Nature Trail, a two mile nature hike through the adjacent Manuka Natural Area Reserve which offers an experience in Hawaiian natural history.
